Case Study: Pluss and British Gas

Pluss is a social enterprise that helps thousands of people with disabilities into employment each year. The organisation provides specialist training and employment to people with physical disabilities, mental health challenges and long-term health conditions.

As a Founding Member of our Social Business Partnership (SBP) programme, British Gas is committed to engaging with social enterprise suppliers. An opportunity was identified at ECL Contracts (a British Gas subsidiary) for a provider of office cleaning services in Plymouth. SBP shortlisted and assessed a number of social enterprise providers in the Plymouth area and recommended Pluss for the contract. Pluss submitted a quote and won the work in an open, competitive bidding process.

The team at ECL Contracts has given very positive feedback on the service provided, and the work has allowed Pluss to give on-the-job training and work experience to a jobseeker with a learning disability, who is now in a much better position to find other work.

"It can be challenging for procurement teams to find local social enterprises that fit their requirements - by working with SBP, the hard work is done for us."  - Hayley Grocock, Corporate Responsibility Manager, British Gas

“We’re really pleased to have this contract as we have wanted to expand for a while. Having seen the requirements of the external contractor and won a competitive bidding process, this will really help us find more cleaning contracts.” - Sally Carr, Area Team Manager, Pluss
